2xYT Broth is a nutritious microbial growth medium designed for the cultivation of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli. It is also commonly used for the propagation of the M13 bacteriophage for research. The high proportions of Tryptone and yeast extract in this medium provide the necessary nitrogen and growth factors that the bacteriophage requires to multiply quickly and in high density without depleting the host cells of these critical nutrients.

Terrific Broth is a nutritionally rich media developed by Tartoff and Hobbs for the culture and proliferation of Escherichia coli. Recombinant strains have been shown to have an extended growth phase in the medium. Terrific Broth supports high cellular density and is commonly used during cultivation of bacteria for plasmid isolation or in vitro protein expression.  

Luria Broth (Miller’s LB Broth) is a nutritious medium designed for the growth and maintenance of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli. E.coli grows to the late log phase and strains are typically derived from E.coli K12. This strain has been modified by specific mutation into an auxotrophic strain incapable of growth in nutrient-deficient media. Luria Broth provides all the nutritional factors to support luxurious growth of E.coli so that the cells do not need to synthesize them on their own.
